Real smooooooth

In light of the fact that my surgery is 23 days away (woo hoo!), I want to try to eat as healthily as possible for the next few weeks. And I thought it might be a good time to try smoothies for breakfast. So I’m looking to you guys for ideas. I know I could look on Pinterest and find a million different recipes, but I’d love to hear from you.

Here are my stipulations:

– No celery (I don’t care what you say, I *can* taste it. And even if I can’t, I’ll know it’s there.)
– No protein powder
– No soy milk

I guess those are my only stipulations, actually. I thought I’d have more. I don’t have a hardcore fancy blender, just a normal cheapish one. Will that suffice?

What do I want in my smoothies? I don’t know, I just want to get my body as prepared for this surgery as possible.

So whatcha got?

  1. I make this South Beach ph 1 friendly smoothie every day in a little take and go blender:
6 oz almond milk (or something similar)
    2 tbs peanut butter
squirt of sugar free choc syrup
    couple scoops greek yogurt
    handful of fresh spinach
    splenda
    ice cubes.

Tastes like a peanut butter cup, can’t taste the spinach in it at all.
Another one I like is frozen berries, almond milk and ricotta cheese w/ spinach.

  2. I thought this was funny as I was reading it I was literally eating celery sticks :]

  3. We love smoothies and make them often!

Our fave that we make all the time is 1 ripe banana, a cup or more of frozen berries, plain or vanilla Greek yogurt. A splash of milk or apple juice. I take the fruit out of the freezer and load it into my 10 year old blender before I shower, and then when I am ready to make the smoothies the fruit has thawed enough to run through the blender.

My FAVORITE smoothie, and my kid’s favorite is an easy green smoothie. Add a cup of fresh pineapple (has to be fresh), a banana, and a few handfuls of fresh baby spinach. Again vanilla or plain yogurt and a splash of juice. I use frozen banana chunks for this one to keep things really cold and avoid ice. Drink this one right away (others I can keep for a few days in the fridge), the pineapple will break down the yogurt after awhile. It’s sweet and super healthy!

Try any flavors that you like. This week we made smoothies with frozen cherries and a fresh banana. I love frozen blueberries and peaches. The plain yogurt will cut back on the sugar.

    Enjoy! :)

  4. I’ll tell you what I put in my basic smoothie every morning (in the exact order I do it, too):

    1. Unsweetened cranberry juice (less than a cup, usually)
    2. 1 cup frozen blueberries
    3. 1 large handful fresh baby organic spinach (can’t taste it as long as you can’t smell if before you throw it in the blender; if you can smell it then it’s starting to go bad)
    4. 1/3 cup canned organic pumpkin puree
    5. 4 frozen strawberries
    6. 1-2 Tbsp ground flaxseed
    7. 1 Tbsp chia seeds

Depending on what else I have in my house, I’ll throw in some fresh pineapple chunks, an orange, some grapes, a bit of rice milk, a banana, etc. If you have a sweet tooth, definitely add some honey to taste.

I run water over the frozen fruit before adding it, to help defrost it just a bit, since my blender sucks and has very little power. Enjoy!

  5. I like green smoothies. I got a good recipe from All things G&D who listed it as part of the Whole Food Living Challenge.
    1 cup of kale
1/2 cup of flat leaf parsley
    1 banana
    1 granny smith apple
2 and 1/2 cups of water (or more if needed)
I usually put 1/4 cup of OJ in it.
Its pretty good and Kale is one of the best things for you.
    (makes two)

She also posted a Coconut water/mango smoothie that is so awesome I drink it out of a wine glass!

  6. I like to make green smoothies too – couple handfuls of spinach, 1/2 cup vanilla greek yogurt, banana, fruit (usually frozen strawberries or blueberries), and some almond milk. It took me forever to get past the color, but it really does take on the taste of whatever fruit I use. May even attempt to get Addie to drink one soon. She needs some veggies. P.S. Your boys are adorable!
